ToadTog - tutorial?

Does anybody have a quick and dirty tutorial on ToadTog? I need to simulate discrete on/off for a toshiba tv. What is the easiest (i.e., mildest learnest curve) to get this done? I've successfully mastered KM and RM upgrades, but have yet to venture into extenders and/or ToadTog. A simple example would be fantastic! I have an 8910 if that helps.

The simplest tutorial is simply trying to make a ToadTog in IR.

Entering assumptions:
(a) You are using the/an extender (I'm pretty sure there is no ToadTog protocol for the unextended 8910);
(b) Your IR file already has the ToadTog device (MISC/1800) and protocol (0181) upgrades loaded (automatically done as part of the extender).

(1) Go to the special functions tab in IR,
(2) click on "ADD"
(3) In the "TYPE" box, select "ToadTog"
(4) Fill in the appropriate boxes as you desire.

I would imagine that the only perhaps slightly obscure parts of the process are
(i) what to put in the "Toggle #" field? The ToadTog protocol allows your remote to keep track of up to 8 binary states. Each of these TT "flags" is represented by a digit (0-8) in the "Toggle #" field. So normally, you would use "0" for ONE component, like your TV, "1" for another component, like your Cable Box, etc. (e.g. for your stated goal, you would use the SAME Toggle # for both the "force ON" and "force OFF" functions);
(ii) What "CONDITION" to select. In your case, you want one to do "Force ON" and the other to do "Force OFF".

Also TT is capable of much more than just creating/simulating deiscrete ON/OFF commands, you can use a TT flag to simply determine ("test") the state of a component, and use that information to execute one of two alternate button sequences (e.g. if your receiver is "on" then you could have it send "mute" to your TV and select the right input on your receiver and assign the Vol keys to the receiver, but if the receiver is "off" have the remote set the remote's Volume keys to the TV)

Thanks for the reply. So, would you suggest I tackle the extender or go unextended ToadTog? Remember, I'm trying to avoid a steep learning curve to solve what seems like an easy problem.

If I can't get discrete input selection working (see https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7799), I may want to use ToadTog for this as well.

I suggest the extender for three reasons:
(1) Rob's link takes you to a standalone TT for the RS 15-1994. I'm not sure that it is directly importable to the URC-8910;
(2) If you intend to do quite a few TTs (input control will require a LOT of them), then you will consume a lot of Keymove memory actually building the ToadTog commands. The extender converts most of your learning memory into Keymove/Macro memory, and you are less likely to run out of memory for your TT functions;
(3) The extender carries with it several other benefits, all outlined in the Extender Beginner FAQ sticky post in the Extenders forum.

As for learning curves, I dont know what to say. The extender does indeed have a learning curve. It's not, however, insurmountable or particularly difficult, but that is not to say that it is not time-consuming. Only YOU can make that call. As for ToadTog only, the learning curve is not real high at all if you read my FIRST reply. If you read the included readme file at the link Rob provided, you may be scared off, however, since it was written BEFORE IR made it so easy to use.

OK, thanks for the info. Not sure what I'm going to do yet. If I use an extender, I will have to convert several learned signals into advanced codes. Not a big deal, but I think some of them were funky (like my DVR button on my DishTV). Anyway, thanks for your help. If I find the time to tackle this, I will.

With the Dish as your active device, try EFC 229 (press the "setup" button followed by 2-2-9.)

You're going to have a learning curve either way, but the extender is probably easier to learn than the old ToadTog.
