How to take apart a Radio Shack 15-2117 remote?

Hi Folks,

This is my first visit in a long time... I logged in and was greeted with "You last visited on Sun Aug 14, 2005 10:22 am"

Yikes, I have 3 little ones, so that may explain it....

Anyway, one of my little ones threw the 15-2117 remote down the stairs and although it survived it...

1.) Made my LCD screen start to bleed internally, so the screen is useless now..... just looks like a big black ink blob.

2.) I think one of the 2 IR transmitters came loose because you have to aim very precisely now to change a channel, etc... & I hear something rattling around inside.

Anyway, I was going to take it apart to see if I can fix #2 (don't think I can fix #1), but can't figure out how to get it open. Does anybody know how to do this or know of a "how to" webpage....my google searches have come up empty.

Thanks!!

This is the gold standard for instructions from Tommy Tyler.

That is a great guide - I use old insurance cards - basically plastic cards about half the thickness of a credit card. They work like a charm.

Thanks Capn!

The good news is that I was able to open the remote. The bad news is that the two IR transmitters were both fine and the item that was rattling around was a transistor (I think it is.... black little half semicircle like item with 3 prongs on it....)

I see where it went .... "U6" on the circuit board, but I think trying to solder it back on is beyond my abilities as it is under the edge of a round half dollar size puck (I think this is the RF Puck) and would be difficult to get to.

I know this is getting really advanced, but I learned never to underestimate the knowlege base of these boards....

Anyone know what this does? Like I said, my remote still works, but not nearly as well.

I can try and post some pictures if that would help.

Thanks again!!
