No output on Yamaha HRT-5540

I just set up a used Yamaha HRT-5540 AV receiver that was given to me. He said it work fine when he disconnected it.
I have all of the cables and wires connected. I don’t get any sound from any of the speakers. I do hear sound in the headphones when I plug them in. Is there some setting or switch that can cause this to happen? If not where should I look to resolve this problem?
