Newbie Installing an Upgrade

Ok, I am a total idiot. I am trying to install an upgrade for my Philips 750VR DVD-VCR combo. I found an upgrade for a 740 which I hope is close. I attempted to follow the steps in the help files as best I could. The upgrade does not seem to have any effect. One of the final lines in the help file instructions about copying and pasteing is to be sure to set the device type. What exactly does that mean?

For example, the VCR portion of that upgrade has the device type as VCR and the setup code as 1000 in the Upgrade Device Window of IR.EXE. The help file says not to change these. Am I supposed to return to the General Tab and enter to code 1000 in the box for VCR? This is currently still at 0x81. If I upload these to the remote and then redownload, it still says 0x81 on the 9910 remote and in IR.exe.

Thanks.

Either YES or CLOSE, depending on exactly what you want to do.

To be precise:

1) On the General Tab, pick the Device button on which you want to test that upgrade. VCR would be a good choice, but you can pick any one you like.

2) In the Type column for that button, change the selection to VCR if it wasn't already.

3) In the Code column for that button type 1000

Those numbers are 4-digit decimal, not hex, so I assume you mean 0081 not 0x81.

Here's another way to look at it. When you add an upgrade to your remote, think of it as adding one more setup code to the thousands that are listed in your manual.

That alone doesn't tell your remote that you want to actually use the code that you just added, so you'll need to tell the remote to use the setup code in the normal way. Which means, either assigning it to a device button using the traditional method described in the manual, or by using the much easier method of assigning it in the General tab in IR.exe

Works great! Thank you the detailed explanations. Much easier to understand now.
