JP1 Remotes

I think we're shooting for approx 150x500 pixel images. The map file is created/edited using Map This! which can be
downloaded from
http://www.abdn.ac.uk/tools/ibmpc/mapthis/

In MapThis!, go to File -> Preferences and:
set Default Map Type to NCSA
turn off Keep NCSA circles true (so you can create ellipses)

In Map This!, click File -> New, this will prompt you to select an
image to work with.

Now you can define rectangles, circles, and polygons.
When you create a shape, just type the button name for the URL. This must match the button name in the RDF (use the name on the right when 2 names are specified).

Once you've got all the shapes defined, just use
File -> Save As... and change the "Save as type:" to "Image Map Files
(*.map)" The file name will default to the name of the image you
opened, which is fine.

The generated NCSA .map file can be used directly with RM v0.59 or later.

You use File->Open to open an exiting NCSA .map or .imp file and
modify the shapes.

The only thing left to do is to add the ImageMap line to the .rdfs
that will be using it, if it isn't already there.

Hi Greg quick question can I also turn off Require default URL or is that required? I am fixing some of the Maps that have labels wrong like the 15-134 shows the Input key as Dash I understand why it was original built wrong the RS manual shows the keys as a - but the remotes are all labeled Input.

Also once I update them is anyone interested in the revised versions?

Edit: Will guess what I think they may have had a manufacturing error I have five units with the Input key below the 7 and one with a Dash - there so maybe the manual is correct....

This is OT, but some 134 manuals came with an insert about the mislabeled input/dash button. The problem with calling the mislabeled button "Input" is that will give you 2 identical Input keys. So what do you call the real Input key? And even though it's labeled Input, it still functions as dash in all upgrades. So making the RDF/Map match the error does more harm than good IMO.

Well, after not having used this program in quite some time, I attempted to use it today and discovered to my chagrin that it does not run on Windows 7! I searched around a bit but could not find a version of MapThis that will run on Win7 platforms! Anybody got a solution?

I just tried it in Win7 32. My first attempt to install failed. The next time around, I R-clicked the install exe and picked Troubleshoot compatibility and accepted the recommended settings (Win XP SP2 compatibility). Then it installed and ran fine.

I can't run it with 64-bit Win 7.

I was able to get "Map This" to run on 64-bit Vista. Turns out that the "Map This" installer doesn't like 64-bit machines but the MapThis.exe is OK with the 32 bit emulation, so this is what I did:

1. Copy the "Map It" folder from "Program Files" from a 32-bit machine into a "Utilities" folder which is at the root of the C: drive of the 64-bit machine. I use the "Utilities" folder (which I created) to store programs that don't have a workable installer. No magic in this at all!

2. Create a shortcut to the "MapThis.exe" somewhere in the Windows "Programs" menu. I put mine inside the "JP1" section.

3. Run "Map This" and set your preferences.

4. If you like, create an association with the file type ".map" to the "MapThis.exe" by "right clicking" on a .map file, selecting the Open with -> "Choose Default Program ..." option, browsing to "MapThis.exe" and insuring the "Always use this Program ..." box is checked, then click "Open".

5. Hint: If you set:
#$PATH:.\
inside a .map file, then you can simply double click that map file in your MAP directory, and "Map This" will locate the corresponding image file if it is in the same directory as the .map file. This works really well for the way RM expects where to find things.

For those without a 32-bit machine to get MapThis! executables, I have uploaded a zip file here:
