IR Widget repair

Post by jetstar52 »

I have one of the earlier-style (ca. 2009) IR Widgets on which I need to replace the USB cable (thank you very much, Pet Cat!). Can anyone tell me what Tommy used to enclose it? It looks like clear heat-shrink, but he was somehow able not only to shrink it around the housing, but also get the ends to fuse together at the front, and on either side of the cable.

I don't know about the front, but at the back around the wire - while the heatshrink is still hot, squeeze it with pliers on both sides of the wire. I got this from Tommy a few years ago and have used it on several projects since.

Thanks. I'll give it a try!

Well, I got it back together, but, looking at the result, I don't think I'll be challenging Tommy Tyler for Craftsman of the Year!
