A few issues on returning to JP1

Post by quartermain »

I have been using a URC-7555 and 7556 for years and recently bought an as-new 7555 from eBay to replace one which was wearing out. I have found that the device keys tend to fail first, some of mine you need 5 or 6 presses to get them to register.

I tried to clone the old remote to the new. I downloaded from the old remote into memory then uploaded that into the new remote. I figured that should make the new one an exact clone of the old. But it does not. There are many differences.

I guess I will download from both remotes and compare the differences on screen. But what am I missing here? Why does what I did not make a clone?

The 7555 and 7556 both have the same signature, so you should be able to load the memory from one into the other, but as you say, there are physical differences between the 2 remotes. Do any of the remotes have a sub-model number (ie, B00, B01, B02, etc)? If so, check that both remotes really do have the same signature.

As for the remote where the buttons have become hard to press, you can fix that with conductive paint (normally sold for shielding in guitars). Basically, if you get this paint, you would take the remote apart (sometimes easier said than done) and then grab the button sheet out of it. Clean it first, if it's got dirty or greasy, then paint the bottom of the buttons with the conductive paint.

Here's a bottle on ebay for $13:

The old and "new" remotes do indeed have different text on the label stuck to the battery cover. One says "URC 11-7555 R00" and the other says "URC 11-7555 B00". I didn't keep track of which is which. Does this mean I can't upload from and download from the other?

If that's the case then if I download the same rmir file into both then they should be the same, yes?

I have a URC-7556 as well but it looks like the years since I have used it have not been kind and the device keys no longer work.I might splash out on some conductive paint since I can't make things any worse.

I only see 1 rdf (10251025) for the URC-7555 so it doesn't look like the differences between R00 and B00 make much difference. If you upload the rmir file from one remote into the other, what happens?

I am starting to think that the remote I just bought is faulty or broken in some way.

If I enter Magic-9-8-0 then I get the single flash then double flash when I hold down Magic, then when I enter the 980 I get no flash with the 9 and a single flash with the 8 then the 0, and that's that. No blink four times.

If it is broken is it a bin job or is there a way to resurrect it? There is no point in trying an eBay return as the seller will just say it worked when he used it.

To answer Rob's question, downloading the rmir from the older remote and uploading it again to the newer one gives me partial functionality. I haven't tried all functions for all devices, that would take forever. I just tried some number keys. All bar the 2 and 9 gave me a flash. Also not working was the -/-- key which I use as Backup or Exit. That was on the upgrade tied to TV.. The upgrade tied to VCR gave me no flashes on any numeric keys nor the -/-- key.

I am very reluctant to overwrite the programming in the old remote in case I brick it then we would have to contend with the 8 original remotes and that would not make for marital harmony.

Last resort would be a URC-6440 which I bought but never used. I'd have to convert some upgrades from the 7555.

It sounds like the "9" button is simply not working, so it might be time to try to repair the buttons.
