button presses not very responsive

I just installed the 8811 extender. I am new to my 8811 remote, so I don't know if this is a remote or an extender issue.

My problem is the remote doesn't seem to be very responsive. I have to press the buttons kinda slow. If I press a button twice, kinda fast, the little red light on the remote only flashes once. In other words, the remote doesn't process the second press. I have SageTV, and when I am going through the menus, I like to press kinda fast to get to different areas. But if I press too fast, the remote only sends one press.

Is there a way that I can increase the responsiveness of the remote?

Have you tried fresh batteries?

(I always go for the simplest option first)

No, haven't changed the batteries. But it seemed to be more responsive before I loaded the extender. For instance, the Volume now requires multiple presses. Before, I could just hold down the button and the volume would repeat. I am thinking that the extender must install some sort of protocol that looks for short and long key presses, but I am not sure.

That protocol (and others) is explicit, meaning that unless it's defined for use by a key move, it won't be invoked.

No, the slow responsiveness is NOT normal. Mark was pointing out that there is a separate and distinct protocol and device upgrade that allows keypresses to behave differently based on (1) short vs. long keypress, or (2) single vs. double keypress.

The extender may install that protocol automatically, but that protocol is only invoked if you specify a keymove that calls on it. It will not automatically affect all (or for that matter ANY) keys. Moreover, the S/DKP protocol is not an integral part of the extender and can be deleted if you don't need it.

Bottom line: the extender itself ought not be causing the behavior you are describing.

I will try new batteries. Grabbed them out of our family battery drawer. Kids probably dropped bad batteries in there.

I can only press buttons at about 3/4 second speed. Any faster, the remote just doesn't process the second press. Maybe this is the same for everyone and I am just expecting too much.

Two things to do:

First, check to make sure you don't have any special key moves or macros bound to the buttons in question. It's possible there's something in there causing the trouble.

Second, upload your saved IR file to the Diagnosis area, and then post a link to it here (be sure to read the post regarding file links below in my signature). Maybe someone can look at it to see if there's anything else obvious.

Ok. I hate to admit this, but I replaced the batteries with new ones. Works like a charm. Now don't I feel silly.
