Phantom keys (as the name implies) do not physically exist on the remote. You typically use them to assign functions for use in macros, etc. They are also used extensively in extenders.

Extenders are model-specific and "extend" the functionality of the remote and/or eliminate most of the restrictions they may have. The best thing to do is download the extender files and read through the included documentation to see if it offers features you think you may want or need. If you're unsure about anything in there, just ask.

BTW, the 2117 is identical internally to the 2116, so you can use the 2116 extenders with it.
