USB cable compatibility for JP1.2 / URC-8820

Post by bobdobolina »

I'd been using a URC-8910 for a while, and bought one of these USB cables to interface with the computer:

http://www.diygadget.com/store/jp1/jp1- ... rod_8.html

Well, I needed some new remotes, so based on this thread I picked up some URC-8820s.

However, the same cable/tools don't seem to be able to download from the remote. I see on the 8820's the interface is listed as JP1.2.

Should this USB cable work with the 8820's? Or do I need a different cable to handle JP1.2? I thought it would work based on the description "The USB Interface was designed to provide compatibility between any computer and any jp1 capable remote" - I guess JP1.2 doesn't qualify as "any jp1 capable remote"?

I'm guessing I might need this:

thanks

I did miss that. I did, however, search for "JP1.2 USB" and that sticky did not come up (nor did I find anything else relevant to the issue at hand).

One of the confusing things for we non-experts is this:

JP1 seems to be a generic term for all of these JP1/JP1.1/JP1.2/JP1.3 remotes.

It also seems that JP1 is in some cases intended to be a specific version number, a la "JP1.0" (which is never used in lieu of "JP1".

Which is which is not altogether clear.

Thank you very much for pointing out that post; it does completely explain the issue.

Let me explain that. The name "JP1" comes from the label that UEI prints on the PCB next to the 6-pin connector. I originally chose that as a name because this group used to be an email group at egroups (that eventually became Yahoo groups) and I wanted something short as we'd have to type it in every time we wanted to send a message.

Well anyway, UEI decided to change the platform that they use in their remotes from the MCU/EEPROM combo that's in a traditional JP1 remote to a flash chip and when they did so, they decided to print JP1.1 on the remotes. They then changed to a different flash chip and they used JP1.2 to denote this, and then they changed yet again to another flash chip and they used JP1.3 to denote this.

So, bottom line, yes I can see that it's confusing, but we're not the source of the confusion.

I understand. Not blaming you. =)

I very much appreciate the site; it's been very useful in my Eternal Quest for the Perfect Remote Control.

So what is inside the JP1 USB cable? Is it a microcontroller or just something specially tasked for USB->I2C?

In other words - is it possible with some blood sweat and tears to modify it for serial communication?

It's a pre-programmed Delcom chip, Tommy would have to explain how it works. Here's the design doc for it...

As for using a serial communication with the older JP1 remotes, even though it was never mass produced Tommy did design a serial cable for these remotes. Here's the design for the serial cable...

Thanks Rob,

I was basically wondering if I could re-purpose my JP1 cable for JP1.3 - however I now understand that the IC in there is pre-programmed for I2C communication so this is not possible.

Off to buy a JP1.3 cable from Tommy :)
