Newbie Question Comcast Remote & Yamaha Receiver

Post by Ray9711 »

Greetings, I am new at all this stuff. My kids gave us a Yamaha Receiver, RX-A720, for Christmas. We have a Comcast DVR box, Cicso RNG-200N, and Sony TV, KDL-52W4100. All are connected with HDMI cables. The Yamaha remote won't accept any of the codes for any of the equipment so the remote is sort of useless and really didn't offer too much anyway. When I turn on the Receiver and then the TV & Comcast box using the xfinity Custom DVR 3 Device Comcast silver remote with the Red OK key everything runs pretty good with the sound coming out of the amplifer and throught the surround sound speakers. I spent a lot of time trying to get the Yamaha remote to provide some one button on features, however, it is not possible. I did find that using the Comcast remote All On button would turn on the TV, Cable box and the Receiver, however, pushing the ALL On button again only turned off the TV & cable box. I also found that the Comcast remote volume button would change to Reciver volume. So I started to look at the Comcast remote to see if I could get it to both turn on and off the Receiver. I tried programming the Aux button with all the codes I could find for the Receiver and none of them would turn the unit off. But now the bad news, the Comcast volume button now will only change the volume on the TV and not the Receiver.

Can someone tell me what to do to get the Comcast volume button to once again control the receiver volume?

Second, is there any way you know of to get the Comcast remote to turn on and off the Cable box, TV and Receiver?

Right now I am to poor from Christmas to buy a universal remote so I need a little patch work.

I would have been nice if Yamaha would have done a better job with the receiver remote and its capabilities.

Thanks for your help!

Most of the Yamaha receivers have separate On and OFF codes instead of a Power Toggle.

When I turn on the Receiver and then the TV & Comcast box using the xfinity Custom DVR 3 Device Comcast silver remote with the Red OK key everything runs pretty good with the sound coming out of the amplifer and throught the surround sound speakers.

That can be done with the remote. TV is the default VPT device. You could change punch through to the AUX device. However you claim that the remote was originally changing through the Comcast. I doubt you changed the punch through device accidentally. So I suspect you did something in the Sony TV. The Audio settings in most sonys can be switched from TV speakers to external speakers. I think this is what has happened.

Once you get back to one of the working Yamaha code, you can try
this EFC 00246 to see if this is the proper power off.
Remember to provide feedback to let us know how the problem was solved and share your upgrades.

Tip: When creating an upgrade, always include ALL functions from the oem remote, even if you never plan on assigning them to a button. Complete function lists makes an upgrade more helpful to others.

Update

Greetings,

After reading your note, I looked at the TV and found a sound section. It was set to remote speakers. I changed it to TV. Strange but did it anyway. Then I went back to the Receiver and confirmed that all the settings were correct. Then I shut everything down and restarted it all. Something like the advice you get from the computer support folks.

Low and behold the Comcast volume changed the TV volume. So then I went and unlocked the TV key audio control. Then the Comcast remote controlled the Receiver volume. And to make things even better, pushing the Comcast All On button turned the TV, Comcast Box and the Receiver off. Thne pushing it again, they all turned on.

Thank you for helping me get this far. I will deal with the BlueRay player later.
