URC-8550 (Topline8) - Backlight Connections

Post by Mog »

I have taken apart my original Topline many times, and at some
point the backlight stopped working

I decided that I would investigate this further, and realised that
the two power supply contact pads from the transformer were not
making a good connection to the backlight itself

My question relates to the physical assembly of these parts -
Is the backlight supposed to lie on top of the PCB, or should
the clear plastic sheet lie in between?

(I am mainly referring to the sheet under the device keys here,
it seems that for the main key array, the clear plastic sheet
has to lie next to the pcb, as there are holes made for the
battery connections)

I suspect that I have lost an important component here - at one
time there were two black (rubber) pieces which I think might
have been conductive?

I have got it working, by placing the backlight on top of the
pcb, and then the plastic sheet on top of that. I have cut a couple
of rubber pieces which when placed in the holes in the plastic sheet
that align with the backlight contact pads, help make a good contact.

I am basically wondering if I have lost a couple of connective pads,
and have mis-assembled the remote in order to get the backlight working?

I'll answer my own question here, as nobody else seems to have
experienced a similar problem...

On the URC-8550 there are two very small conductive pads,
which make the connection from the PCB to the Backlight, through the
clear plastic sheet!

Don't lose them like I did!
( I have now made up some substitutes, and the backlight works again :) )
