Can 6131 be used to control NaviPod?

Post by ian »

Hi-
Just bought a standard One for All 6131, and I would like to know if can be used to control Ten Technology's NaviPod for a 3G iPod. Here are the specs

1. Device: Ten Technology NaviPod for 3G iPods
2. Type of device: MP3 remote
3. Remote model: URC-6131
4. JP1 user? No
5. Still have original remote? Yes
6. Checked Yahoo file section? Yes
7. Checked Pronto file section (at R/C)? No

Thanks much for your help!

The short answer is "yes", but if there isn't a file for it in the File Section, we would need a way to get the signal information (which requires a learning remote). Furthermore, your remote needs a modification in order for you to use JP1 to upgrade it.

I would suggest giving One For All a call to see if they already have a code for this device and if they do, you should send it in for an upgrade.

ps. thanks for using the template, it makes this so much easier.

Thanks for the quick response!

I just put in a request with One for All, I'll write back when I get an answer.

Is the JP1 upgrade easy to do? If it's just a matter of buying a JP-1 chip and a cable, I'm all for it...

But if I have to do any soldering (sodering?) or rip the remote open, I may just go and buy a pre-modded one.

Most people find the concepts of JP1 pretty easy to grasp, but it's not for the non-techie types.

The URC-6131 does need a modification for you to be able to modify it using JP1. Not only does that mean you'll have to open up the remote, but you'll have to solder in both an EEPROM chip and a 6-pin connector. But, if you'd rather buy a modified unit, I'd be more than happy to sell one to you! :)

Would that also make it a learning remote? (I've heard that people do sell modded 6131's with that feature.)

If so, how much would the mod and the shipping be?

I'm thinking of getting some remote-contolled lighting with a RatShack kit in a month or so (thinking of using the PIP buttons at the bottom), so a modded remote may just be the way to go!

Thanks!

Oh, one other thing-

my 6131 has a 6-pin port under the battery cover marked JP-1... so does this unit already have the connector you described? (maybe it's a slightly newer version?)

Thanks!

Nope, it doesn't make it a learning remote, it just makes it an upgradeable remote (using the JP1 tools). If you need a learning remote (and I think you do), the cheapest one that I have available is the URC-8811 which is $19.

AFAIK, I am the only supplier of modified URC-6131 remotes. The only other places you can get them are BlueDo and Surf Remote and they both get them from me.

The remote is $23 and shipping is $4. Check out my "for sale" thread for more info.

If you have a 6-pin connector in there already, it sounds like you must have a service remote, in which case it's ready to go. The standard remote available in the stores just has 6 holes where the 6-pin is supposed to go. I'm curious, where did you get this remote?

Just FYI, it's not a "newer" version as there aren't any JP1-ready versions of the URC-6131 in the stores.

My bad... my 6131 just has the empty six-pin holes. It's a standard unit I bought from Best Buy. I thought maybe it was a slightly newer version.

Sounds like a great price for the modded version! I'm visiting my folks in FL next weekend, and I'm trying to convince them to buy a 6131 for their house.

If I'm successful, I'll give them the one I have now and purchase a mod from you!

If I hear back from One for All with those codes for the iPod remote, I'll send them to you. If I could just get that working, I'd be all set :)

Thanks for all your help and time this morning!

Answer from Ten Technologies

Post by ian »

Hi-

E-mailed both OFA and the manufacturer of the NaviPod...

No answer from OFA, they do not have any codes for that.

Ten Technologies wrote the following:

Hello! The naviPod uses a 38 kHz carrier frequency. You should be able to get most universal learning remotes to learn the naviPod IR codes from the naviPod remote. However, you must make sure that it is a learning remote; otherwise, this will not work. We hope that this will help. Thank you.

Thanks!

NaviPod and OFA are totally different companies, so there's no reason why NaviPod would know which universals support their device. However, the fact that they mention that the signal is 38kHz means it's quite likely that it's the NEC protocol, but we would still need to know the correct device codes and command codes.

Why don't you see if Navipod is willing to give you the actual data for their signals. Tell them that they can give it to you in any format and we'll figure it out from there.
