Hot Tip and Plea for Range Help

Post by robertmyhtpc »

Just an fyi to those using the URC-9911B00, I purchased a Russound connecting block, model 857 because I needed more emmiter outputs than my xantech had. To my pleasant suprise, the 857 has a generic ir input that gladly accepts the output from the 9911's receiver module. Best is that it costs only $26 US. Works great for me!

Only problem for me is the range on the HTPro I got is pathetic. I get inconsistant reception at only 8 feet. I have bounced around in here but not found anyone with a concrete solution. Has anyone considered changing the antenna? Radio Shack sells a http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?c ... Fid=20-176
which is a scanner antenna.• Covers 108-1300MHz with peak performance in 152-470MHz range. I am hoping someone may have some insight on rf and whether the mod is possible. I can easily mount the antenna above my head in the attic, so form factor is not an issue.

Thanks in Advance

I'll answer this part, but you should repost the question about changing antennas in the Hardware forum.

There are several reasons why you might be getting bad range. First, if devices are picking up both the IR signal from the remote and the IR signal from the RF base station, that can cause problems. Second, if you live in a noisy RF environment, your base station could be picking up noise and that can limit reception. In this case you should check out this post at Remote Central. It talks about a mod you can make to the RF base station on a 15-2117 (the base stations are the same).

There are probably two issues that are hurting your performance.

The first may be RF interference. You can check for this by observing the IR receiver box when you are NOT using the remote. Look at the unit, preferably by using an electronic viewfinder (like in a camcorder or digital camera) to see if the IR lights are flashing when you are not using the remote.

If they are, then you probably have interference. A larger antenna will make this problem worse.

There are a few threads discussing solutions to the interference problem.

After I fixed my interference problem, I was still having difficulty getting the signals through the walls at the most distant rooms in my house.
I fixed this by increasing the voltage. Here is my thread discussing what I did....The remote has not burned out yet and still seems to be working great.
